I ...I do it just that way but I don't use the tool. I use my small 2 1/2' square ruler and I make mine 2 3/8th so that's the length I cut mine. I still always have to open them both up and do the "kiss together and twist" motion to get it right so I can sew it. I usually just aim and shoot for the corner after pinning.
