Irons...I Love 'em...I Hate 'em

If you've known me for a while you know I've had some iron problems over the years...I've had several very pricey irons that sputtered and spewed all over my ironing board and quilt pieces...I've bought cheap ones and decided I'd just replace them when they died...but every iron drives me nuts when it shuts off after a few minutes of not using it. I hate 'em.  When I want my iron hot, I want my iron hot...so my friend Gloria told me about a Rowenta
that was on sale at All Brands...my ears perked up...I was very interested...on sale, no shipping and no sales tax and the very best of all...It doesn't shut off...I ordered it even though I said I would spend money on another iron.  I have followed every direction and so far I LOVE it!  It has 1700 watts so it gets super hot...awesome steam (I'm a big steam girl) and I used it all afternoon and it NEVER shut off...Ladies, I'm in LOVE!

I also saw this starch alternative in my grocery store yesterday...made by Bounce...and I really, really like it...it makes the fabric nice and crisp like spray starch but no flakes...and it smells really good.

Before I close I want to thank all of you for your amazing comments on my Blog Birthday post...that you for looking back on the past 6 years with me....we've all come a long way...here's to 6 more years!

I kind of have an iron obsession..when I was at my granddaughters' last week, my precious little Rowenta travel iron shorted out and the cord burned up. I have the newer one, and I hope I like it as well. I have a big Rowenta, and it cuts off. I'm like you, it's very annoying..good luck, I hope your iron keeps helping you for years to come. I'll look for the Bounce alternative..

I've gone expensive, cheap, expensive, cheap, now I'm at expensive but next will be cheap! Glad you have an iron you love. I've never seen the Bounce stuff. I'll have to look out for it. Thanks!

Off to buy your iron! LOL. I have a Rowenta, but it is just about on it's last leg. Thanks for the review!

irons are a pain I think. I'm not even going to talk about mine, don't want to jinx it! I see you've got The Red Tent on your kindle-one of my favorite books. Our book club was split either loved it or hated it.

I have three vintage irons that are hot and stay hot. I won't trade them for anything! I'm glad you found one you love!

That sounds like a great iron! I'm a fan of cordless, but I'll have to keep that one in mind. Thanks for the info about the Bounce starch alternative. I'm definitely going to look for it.

I so hear you! For what I've spent on irons, I could have rented laboratory space and developed my own! Glad you found one you like. I almost bought it but stopped myself because the one I have now works and is only 3 weeks old. Glad to find my next new iron when this one inevitably craps out! Now if I could just find my next ex...hehe.

I want an iron with no Teflon, one that gets hot and I DO want it to shut off, but not so quickly (I have been known to forget to turn it off and DH is not thrilled when that happens), and I don't use steam, so I'd prefer no holes in the surface, but try to find an iron like that these days. The one I currently have only meets the first of those qualifications, so I guess I am in the market, but not immediately. I'll have to get by for a while before I drop money on an iron again.

I've been very fortunate with my irons. For years I used my old fashioned GE iron til the cord finally gave up. I bought my German made Rowenta around 1997 or 98 and it is still going strong! I love it. Hope I get another 15 years out of it :-)

Carol - I am like you - hate and love them. I am a little nervous about getting one that does not shut off because I am so used to an iron shutting off, I just might forget!! I'm going to go sleep on it!!

I just did a post recently about the frustrations with irons. I REALLY hope your Rowenta continues to behave. My last 2 Rowenta's made it about a year before they began to drip, sputter and die.

Sheesh. A girl gets a little busy and she misses a birthday party! Grrrr. A belated VERY Happy Birthday!

Irons that shut off?!? What fool decided that was a good idea? I know... I know... leaving the iron on all day long is a bad idea as it uses a lot of power. And there is the fire-hazard issue... okay, it's not an entirely a bad idea. Unless you're a quilter who doesn't want to have to wait for it to heat up.

Over the years, I've used Rowentas I have loved and Rowentas that I am convinced were possessed by demons. I'm now on my third Steam Generator model and they're probably my favorite... even though they only last me about three years each.

I hope you get lots of terrific use - and years - out of your new iron. :)

(Hi to the boys!)

I have exactly the same issues. I gave up on the pricey one and have a cheaper model but it shuts off really quick. I wish we had more options like the Rowenta in Aussie.

I always buy rowneta's , yes some have spit and leaked after time but considering how much we use the irons I think they are worth every penny!
Kathie who is looking forward to your next 6 years and watching the kids grow up too :)

Thanks for the iron recommendation. I want a steam iron that gets good and hot ... and stays hot (i.e., doesn't shut off). I'm definitely going to have to check into the Rowenta you recommended! ;-)

I think we all have that love/hate relationship! I am with you - I will not have an iron that shuts off automatically. I love my Rowenta - it is starting to spit, but I use it a lot and have had it along time, so I think it's worth the price.

My iron goes beep, beep, beep if I leave it too long. Nearly as annoying as shutting off

I love my travel Rowenta iron. Like all irons they eventually die. You can get one at Bed Bath and Beyond for 39.99 and use a 20 percent off coupon. Thanks for the heads up on Bounce, i will look for it in my stores. Bev

I have the same love hate relationships with irons...so frustrating. I was just at quilt camp and they had a Panasonice cordless iron...WOW!!! I loved that iron and think I will be ordering one. Hoping to find that spray starch you mentioned too!!

I too have been through iron trials. I have a sort of cheap one now, and I found that it doesn't shut off so much if I turn off the steam when I am not using it.

I also have a vintage GE which I love, and it was sooooo cheap from Ebay. It needs a new cord to be really safe, but it is super hot and never shuts off til I want it to.

Hi Carol,
I am always looking for a great iron! This sounds like a winner! I am obsessed with steam. One question about the Bounce stuff, does it leave residue on your iron?
Also, I know you are friends with Kelly from Charming Chatter - I am missing her blog posts. Is she well?

She's a beauty. My Rowenta has been with me for over 7 years and I consider myself very lucky. LOL We really do abuse our irons.

My iron seems to do okay as long as I don't put water in it. I use a spray water bottle. BUT I think I am going to have to try that Bounce alternative. I'm always sharing my current starch alternative with Dear Hubby and that can get a little price-y if you know what I mean.

*argh* Irons! I only buy mine at Costco these days because of their return policy. Just keep that box and receipt . . . . when the iron dies - back it goes.
