Update on Mom

I don't have very good news to report.  Mom started downhill again last Thursday.  Just not feeling good and by Sunday she had no energy at all.  She had an appointment scheduled for yesterday with a hematologist so she said she'd just wait until then for him to tell her what was going on.  He did her blood work again and it was down to 6.7 almost where it was when she was in the hospital 3 weeks ago.  He also said that her cells are all misshapen and malformed and in his opinion she has a form of leukemia, but that he wanted to do a marrow test to make sure.  He did that and promptly put her in the hospital.  They are giving her 3 units of blood this time.  Not sure what the prognosis is going to be...he did say that she would probably have to go in on an outpatient basis every 2 weeks for more blood...but that in between  she should feel good.  I just don't know how long they can do that before it doesn't work anymore.

So our trip to see the kids is off...Josh is going to try to bring Hampton and Camden down by himself, Katie is not allowed to travel anymore.  She's so upset that she won't be able to come.

So, that's my story...not a happy one this morning sadly...thank you so much for sticking with me.

Carol, I am so sorry to hear this about your Mom. I have a friend whose Mom had to have blood very often, just like your Mom, and she lived for many years on that therapy. I hope it will give her the renewed strength that she needs.

Sending hugs and prayers for all of you. Hang in there. They can do wonders dealing with leukemia. I've spent the last 2 years with my brother's leukemia battle and he's winning. Take care of you too!

Believe me when I tell you, I know the heartache of caring for elderly parents. Sometimes it's hard to remember all the blessings that come with it when we're in the middle of the care-taking.

My heart is with you. The decline of Mother always breaks a daughter heart -- at least it does with me. I am always saddened whenever I think of my own Mother languishing in a nursing home and calling me every once in awhile demanding to see me. I so wish I lived closer (I am four hours drive away and my Brother looks after her).

So very sorry to hear this stunning news. I can only imagine how you are feeling right now, this turn of events truly rocks your world - as if it has not already been well shaken. I'm glad the kids are coming home. Keeping all of you in my thoughts.

Carol, it's so hard when a parent declines, you want so much for it to not be so. My dad had many many transfusions and did well until he decided to stop them as the quality of his life wasn't much. I pray that you and your mom will do well and that she will be comforted as will you. Best wishes.

So sorry about your mom. I am going through pretty much the same thing. My mom had a stroke in Sept. and lost the ability to swallow. She is home now. It is slowly coming back, but making pudding out of everything from meat to water is not an easy task. Then last month she had a bowel obstruction and was in the hospital for a week. It resolved itself, but last night she was complaining about abdominal pain again in the same spot as last time. We are hoping and praying that it is not another blockage.
You and your family are in out thoughts and prayers. Just do as I do -- take things one day, sometimes one hour, at a time.
